In a world where many feel compelled to catalog their each and every move on social media, often it is the ones who don’t overshare who inspire the most fascination. Such is the case for Serbian beauty Zaga Grau, whose quiet Instagram presence has amassed her a dedicated following of more than 14,000 fans. Eschewing the typical outfit-of-the-day posts, Grau, an interior design student who’s modeled for the likes of Calvin Klein and Maryam Nassir Zadeh, prefers moments caught in time: a manicured hand concealing a face, shadows cast against a wall, a trio of stones lying atop a bronzed leg, or, most recently, a pile of shorn locks followed by a selfie debuting an Edie Sedgwick–like chop.
“It’s a psychological experiment,” explains Grau of the new look. “I see myself differently just as other people see me differently, too.” So just how has the chop changed her? “I used to have this classical, elegant style, but when I cut [my hair] short I realized that I needed something more playful. [My look] became a bit too serious.” Besides replacing rich Kérastase products with baby shampoo, Grau has been drawn to colorful clothes and makeup: a dark red-brown lipstick, a touch of mascara, and eyeshadows and eyeliners in different shades. “All of the sudden I’m experimenting more, which is fun,” says Grau. “I like playing roles. This is a new role for me.”
